What's inside ?

Emerald Island GPS Map is based on free open data and tools. Data come from MountainViews, OpenstreetMap, megalithomania and USGS.

MountainViews OpenStreetMap
Megalithomania USGS

MountainViews summits
Data are provided by one of the best hillwalking online resources for ireland. Created by Simon Stewart, MountainViews is the place to begin for enthousiast hillwalkers in Ireland.

OpenStreetMap data
OpenStreetMap is a free open mapping project. Like Wikipedia, anyone can contribute to this great project.

megalithomania - The home of Irish Prehistory - provides some data about Ireland's prehistoric heritage (rock art, ogham stones, stones, tombs, burials, holy wells, fortifications...).

SRTM data
Elevation layer (contour lines)
Shuttle Radar Topographic Mission data (SRTM) used for the map are the one with 1 arc-second resolution (i.e. nearly the same as a 30m grid samples). Increased resolution does not mean necessarily a better precision.
  • With SRTM Void Filled, most holes are corrected but not in all cases (some holes are still present in original cell n54_w009).
  • In high areas, contour lines are often at least 10m below the true ground (nevertheless consisten with NASA mission accuracy objectives).
  • For very steep ground, the elevation error can increases a lot. For example, around Faha ridge the loss is nearly 100m !

What it means for hill walkers, the contour lines will give you a good idea of the terrain around you with an horizontal approximation of 100-150 meters and +/-10 to 110m elevation. Do not expect avoiding a cliff with your eyes locked on your GPS screen.

A thought about walking in Irish Mountains

Despite their small elevation, irish mountains are true mountains. Do not underestimate the difficulties. Before to conquer a summit, check the weather and bring with you clothes you will appreciate to wear if bad conditions catch you. Take enough water and food for all members of your party.
Remember you that a GPS receiver is only a secondary mean for navigation. Be sure to be able to find your way back home without your GPS (bringing a paper map and a compass may be a good idea).
If you use to walk only on well marked trails, irish mountains may not be well suited for you, the ground can be "a little" wet and slippy, even on steep ground. Nevertheless few summits have some more or less marked trails (and not all official).
Keep in mind this rule : bring back with you what you bring in mountains. Nature is fragile, preserve it.

Why donate ? Since 2006, Emerald Island map is available for free because it is built with free data according to their authors and my wish. Garmin GPS devices evolve with new mapping features and I cannot test without one. Donations will be used to buy a new Garmin GPS device and, if needed, softwares. Any surplus money will be used for hosting the website, sponsoring other projects about mapping or for a humanitarian association.
If you click on the "Donate" button, you will be redirected to a Paypal form.

Installation & use

Useful softwares
These software may help you to display maps, to prepare your route and to manage your date to and from your GPS device.
  • Basecamp is a free Garmin software for both Mac OS X and Windows.
  • JavWa GMTK is a powerful maps manager for Windows and Mac OS X.
  • Map Manager is the free official Garmin software to install maps in Basecamp for Mac OS X.
  • Map Installer is the free official Garmin software to upload maps on your Garmin device for Mac OS X.
  • QMapshack - or its ancestor QLandkarteGT - is available on Linux, Mac OS X and Windows to manage maps, GPS data, create waypoints, routes... and display all of these data.

The Emerald Island GPS Map is provided as a Mac OS X application and a Windows setup programm.

Mac OS X
Once Map Manager is installed, double click on one of the layers you want to install in Basecamp. To install the layers on your GPS, use Map installer.

The easy way:
Launch the installer you downloaded from this website.

The alternative way (and probably useless):
Launch the Mac application, copy the files from your desktop to your Windows computer.
Use Extra option in JavaWa GMTK toolbar to import "*.gmapi" in Basecamp.

No file provided.
To get files, download Windows installer and launch it with Wine.
With QLandKarteGT, select submaps, once it is done click on Map export button. Upload the gmapsupp.img file on your GPS (recent Garmin devices are managed like USB key). You can rename the gmapsupp.img file, not too old Garmin GPS can manage more than on mapset in memory.
Nota bene : QMapshack is able to open a gmapsupp.img file and display all its content at once (including customized map style)
